Supporting and Empowering Women Through the Women’s Bean Project

September 14, 2021

You might’ve been out grocery shopping at one of the local Whole Foods, Safeway, or King Soopers in Colorado and seen some Women’s Bean Project products on the shelf. You could have also recently purchased a Wonderland home and received a delicious welcome basket filled with these same various food products.  So, did you ever think that you could have products in your kitchen that can simultaneously support and empower Colorado women in need?

Wonderland Homes’ Welcome Basket

At Wonderland Homes one of our core missions is to give back to the local community here in Colorado. In efforts to support the women who are actively pursuing a better life for themselves and their families, we are overjoyed about our collaboration with the Women’s Bean Project. When you buy a home at Wonderland, you’ll be given a welcome basket prepared by these very women.

These welcome baskets are filled with various healthy food items packaged by the employed women of Women’s Bean Project. Offered are an array of delicious products such as soup, chili, baking mixes, spice blends, instant meals, popcorn, coffee & tea, and snacks. All the food is packaged by resilient and hard-working women, how about that?! A new home, delicious food, and a great cause behind it all.

About Women’s Bean Project

The Women’s Bean Project Vision:

“We believe that all women have the power to transform their lives through employment. So we hire women who are chronically unemployed and we teach them to work by making nourishing products. They learn to stand tall, find their purpose and break the cycle of poverty. Because when you change a woman’s life, you change her family’s life.”

Women’s Bean Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit transitional employment program that enables women of poverty to overcome chronic unemployment due to unimaginable circumstantial challenges they have faced in their life that prevented them from achieving their greatest success. The women work full time for seven months as a production assistant as well as taking 60 hours of core curriculum classes. The organization serves as an uplifting experience for the employed women all the while further empowering their future by providing life-long skills in areas of education and health.

The program contributes to the education of these women through classes learning a variety of skills like financial and computer literacy, résumé building, and job readiness. Secondary courses are provided by the community to better the physical and mental well-being of these women such as; dental and vision exams, AA and sobriety groups, and yoga classes. By the end of the program, these women graduate with the job experience, readiness, and confidence to secure a long-term position elsewhere out in the field.

Below are some quick facts and stats about the Women’s Bean Project:

  • 93% of the women who graduate are still employed a year later
  •  A total of about 60 to 65 women are employed by Women’s Bean Project a year
  •  Women’s Bean Project produces more than 50 food products, from original bean soups to baking mixes to popcorns and other treats
  • To be considered for the program, women are required to be at least 21 years old
  • The combined cost of a criminal conviction and a year of incarceration can exceed $70,000 – Employment is key to breaking out of poverty and staying out of prison
  • Entry-level placeholder jobs vs productive employment are pivotal to the longevity of a job and opportunity for advancement
